Inaugural APVIA Awards Ceremony Held in Singapore, Seven Winners for Five Categories Announced

The Ceremony of APVIA Awards 2013 was held in Sands Expo & Convention Centre of Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on 29 Oct. 2013, with seven outstanding organizations/institutions/individuals in Asian PV industry recognized and acclaimed.

“APVIA Awards”, launched by the Asian Photovoltaic Industry Association (APVIA), aims to recognize organizations and individuals who have made remarkable contributions to the PV industry through achievements in the areas of capability development or innovation, with a further objective to promote the development and advancement of the solar PV industry in the Asia region.

This inaugural APVIA Awards was presented in five categories – Industry, Technology, Application, Education and Finance, to organizations/institutions or individuals. These five categories provided opportunities to honour established and emerging companies, research institutes, professionals, entrepreneurs and individuals across the entire photovoltaic industry.

Mr. Edwin Khew, Secretary-General of APVIA, introduced the significance and objective of APVIA Awards at the ceremony. Awards presenters included Mr. Kng Meng Hwee, Deputy Chief Executive of Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore, Mr. Gongshan Zhu, Executive Director, Chairman&CEO of GCL-Poly Energy Holdings Limited who is the newly elected Chief Chairman of APVIA, Dr. Zhengrong Shi, Founder & Executive Director of Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd., the ex-Chief Chairman of APVIA, and Prof. Armin Aberle, CEO of Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS).

Dr. Peng Fang was presented with Industrial Contribution Award (Individual) for his leadership in JA Solar during the industry down turn, which enabled the company to become the best financially stable company, while GCL-Poly Energy Holdings Limited, the largest high-purity polysilicon producer in the world, won Industrial Contribution Award (Enterprise) for its leading role in silicon ingot and wafer manufacturing, its idea of “Bringing Green Power to Life”, and its commitment to low-cost, high-quality, socially responsible and environmentally-friendly production.

Technological Achievement Award went to Phoenix Solar Pte Ltd, the company which has made innovative achievement by successfully installing and connecting to the grid the first floating photovoltaic (PV) system in Southeast Asia.

Photovoltaic Application Award was given to First Solar Australia Pty Ltd for the construction of the Greenough River Solar Farm (GRSF), the first utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) project in Australia, which is ten times larger than any other operating solar power plant in the country.

Prof. Martin Green, the “Modern Prometheus” who have cultivated a great number of top talents in PV technology and industry fields for many countries, including China, was presented with Academic Contribution Award (Individual) for his remarkable talent and dedication spirit in education, while Trina Solar Limited, one of the top 10 companies in China with high innovative ability and a major player in global PV industry, won Academic Contribution Award (Enterprise) for their constant emphasis on high-level talent training and active participation in talent training projects through Industry-University-Research cooperation.

And Banking and Financing Initiative Award went to Standard Chartered Bank, which have supported the PV industry with a broad range of financing solutions and advisory capabilities and have demonstrated a long term commitment to the sector.

APVIA will continue to organize high-level events to facilitate exchanges within PV communities across Asia and throughout the world, and APVIA Awards 2014 is waiting to celebrate new achievements in Asian PV industry in the coming year!
